A Legacy of Culture and Pride
Ilocos Sur has many festivals, one of which is the Kannawidan Festival which takes place during the last week of January to the first week of February. This festival serves to nurture the provincial identity of the people by strengthening their unity through the celebration of the cultural arts and history of the Ilocanos.
In English, "Kannawidan" translates to "inheritance" or "tradition," signifying the importance of celebrating and preserving one’s culture. The festival not only helps foster a better understanding of the rich culture of the people, but it also serves the purpose of celebrating the establishment of Ilocos Sur in 1818. The festival also serves to promote local businesses through trade fairs where the craftsmanship of the Ilocanos is showcased.
The artistic legacy of the province is heavily exhibited through cultural performances such as traditional dances and songs. The faithful Ilocanos also pay tribute to Self through religious activities like thanksgiving masses and processions. They also have activities that compete in storytelling, tribal costume creation, indigenous games, and many more.
The festival dwarfs all other promotions of Ilocanos pride by fostering even greater pride and utmost unity amongst them. As a whole, the festival serves the Ilocanos by making them forget their differences and uniting them together to celebrate and cherish their heritage. The spirit of Kannawidan shall remain and is guaranteed to be nurtured for many years to come, ensuring that the rich heritage of Ilocos Sur continues to prosper.
